Franklin County Commissioners have approved the creation of a committee to look at long-term answers to help solve the beach parking issues on Alligator Point

Franklin County Commissioners have approved the creation of a committee to look at long-term answers to help solve the beach parking issues on Alligator Point.

Parking has been a constant problem at Alligator Point for years because there aren’t many places to park, and visitors tend to take liberties once all the legal parking spaces are filled.

There have been complaints of beach goers parking on dunes, vegetation, and even private property, including people's driveways.

The problem is worst near public beach access points where there are an average of 10 parking spaces for the public – but sometimes 30 or 40 cars that need to park especially during the summer months.

Earlier this year the county began placing large boulders in strategic locations to avoid illegal parking as a short-term temporary solution.

Now the county wants to look at more long-term solutions to the problem and have agreed to work with the Alligator Point Taxpayers Association and other groups to create a 5-to-7-member committee to create some long-term parking suggestions for the commission to review.

District 2 Commissioner Bert Boldt will create and submit a list of appointees for the committee.
