Clean Water Act Turns 50 I Graham Creek I Ice Cream SATURDAY I Coastal Clean Up

Dear Friends & Members,

Everyone here at Apalachicola Riverkeeper hopes you're enjoying the last weeks of summer. Please know we are truly grateful for your support!

As you know, much of the work we do at Apalachicola Riverkeeper is quite serious stuff. Protecting water includes monitoring for pollution, challenging harmful development, trying to get upstream policymakers to care about downstream ecology and even pass legislation to fix some of the problems in the ACF Basin. The list of "heavy stuff" goes on. However, the light hearted, flip side of that coin is well, ice cream.

Yes, ice cream, metaphorically speaking. In recent prepping for our upcoming Ice Cream Social with staff, board members and other volunteers, I'm warmly reminded of how much the Apalachicola River and Bay region means to so many people. People like you who care about our water and land. Folks pitch in to help in so many different ways. You support Apalachicola Riverkeeper with your gifts of dollars, time and talents. You join Eco-Outings and Clean Ups, rally for RiverTrek, call your elected officials on water protection issues, celebrate clean water with your children, share our e-news and blogs with friends. The list goes on and on. You make a difference in protecting this biodiverse American treasure--the Apalachicola River, Floodplain and Bay.

Please keep up the great work!

All the best from the Apalachicola Riverkeeper crew,

Georgia Ackerman

Riverkeeper and Executive

P.S. This is me counting spoons for tomorrow. I'm excited to see everyone! (3pm ET)

Clean Water Act Turns 50

2022 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Clean Water Act — one of the most effective U.S. laws ever enacted and a model for clean water laws across the globe. By establishing citizens’ right to enforce it, the Clean Water Act served as a powerful tool to end the culture of dumping raw sewage and industrial waste into our rivers without consideration of public health, public use, or environmental repercussions. Continued

Graham Creek Reflections

Our recent visit brought participants from Crawfordville, Tallahassee, Apalachicola and Panama City. While several folks were quite experienced paddlers, including some “RiverTrekkers” past and present, most had not explored this stretch of water previously. Suffice to say, we were all delighted by our morning together. While we encountered no other humans, turtles, alligators, and fish were abundant.  Continued
