Franklin County is moving forward on a plan to improve parking around the St. George Island public beach.
St. George Island had a lot of overflow parking issues in that area, especially during peak tourist season.
Earlier this month the County Commission agreed to pay over 16 thousand dollars to the engineering firm, Dewberry & Associates for the design, permitting, and bid specs for parking improvements from West 1st Street to Chili Boulevard.
The plan is to construct a parking area along the expansive Gulf Beach Drive right-of-way.
This area is adjacent to the existing parking area for Lighthouse Park and is centrally located in the St. George Island commercial district.
