Franklin County’s coastline is a lot cleaner today thanks to hundreds of volunteers and a lot of work

Franklin County’s coastline is a lot cleaner today thanks to hundreds of volunteers and a lot of work.

306 volunteers came out September 17th and collected 6 tons of trash from local beaches, islands, bay shores, and rivers during this year's annual Coastal Cleanup event.

Cleanups were done at 16 sites and volunteers removed over 330 bags of trash which was primarily the type of trash you would expect to see including cans, bottles, cigarette butts, plastic, Styrofoam, fishing gear and rope.

But every year volunteers find a few interesting items too.
This year they found a rug, and some underwear, a 1995 oyster ticket from Louisiana, and a cellphone, money, a baseball catcher’s shin guard, and a shop vac.

They also found a broken Bob's Barricade, an unopened bottle of champagne with the bottom missing, Christmas ornaments, a plumbing pressure gauge, a metal spike with concretions, possibly from WWII, and a 5-inch pink mermaid’s tail.

The Franklin County Coastal Cleanup is sponsored by the Apalachicola Riverkeeper, the Ocean Conservancy, and the Franklin County Departments of Parks & Recreation and Solid Waste & Recycling
