Three North Atlantic Right Whales Now Swim Gear Free

North Atlantic right whale Chiminea was observed gear-free, with an inset image of when she was previously seen entangled

Learn more about three right whales who were seen entangled in late 2024 but have since broken free of that gear and now swim free. While this is good news for these whales, we still don't know the full extent to which these entanglements affected their health. We will continue to monitor and document them.

Endangered California Coho Salmon Experience Record-Breaking Spawning Season on Mendocino Coast

Juvenile Central California Coast coho salmon held up over a bucket of water

Last winter, Central California Coast coho salmon returned to Mendocino Coast rivers in the highest numbers since monitoring began. The overall numbers remain low compared to the species’ past abundance, but NOAA scientists are excited by the results.
