FCAT Scores a Mixed Bag (Part 1)

The Florida Department of Education Tuesday released more FCAT scores, including 3rd through 10th grade reading and math scores and science results for 5th, 8th and 11th graders. 75 percent of local third graders scored at or above grade level in reading, the state wide average was 72 percent. 87 percent of third graders at the consolidated school passed the reading portion of the test. 75 percent of local third graders passed the math section, just below the statewide average of 76 percent. At the ABC school, the passing rate was 77 percent. Only 58 percent of local 4th graders passed the reading section of the FCAT – the statewide average was 70 percent. 63 percent of 4th graders at the Consolidated school passed the reading section. 58 percent of local fourth graders also passed the math section, statewide it was 71 percent – for the ABC school it was 70 percent. Local 5th graders also fell below the state average in reading and math – 59 percent of Franklin County 5th graders passed the reading section of the FCAT this year, statewide it was 67 percent. At Chapman Elementary School 71 percent of 5th graders passed the reading section. 52 percent countywide scored at grade level or above in math – the statewide average was 61 percent. 100 percent of Chapman 5th graders scored at or above grade level on math – at Brown elementary it was 16 percent. The science section proved much harder for 5th graders – statewide the passing rate was 43 percent, in Franklin County it was 24 percent. Chapman 5th graders also led the pack on the science section of the test with 50 percent passing. We will bring you the results of the 6th through 10th grade FCATs on Thursday.
