Local FCAT Scores Leave Room for Improvement

The Florida Department of Education Tuesday released FCAT scores, including 3rd through 10th grade reading and math scores and science results for 5th, 8th and 11th graders. Middle School scores in FranklinCounty fell below state averages, except at the ApalachicolaBayCharterSchool. 57 percent of local 6th graders scored at or above grade level on reading in this year’s FCAT – the state average was 63 percent. At the ApalachicolaBay charter school, however, 70 percent of 6ths graders passed the reading section. In math 43 percent of local 6th graders scored a 3 or higher on the FCAT, statewide the percentage was 53 percent. At the ABC school it was 58 percent. 55 percent of local 7th graders scored at grade level or above on the reading section of the FCAT – statewide it was 65 percent – at the ABC school it was 75 percent. In math 54 percent of local 7th graders scored a three or higher – the statewide average was 61 percent. At the ABCSchool 75 percent of 7th graders scored at grade level or above in math. In the 8th grade, 47 percent passed the English section, statewide it was 53 percent and at the ApalachicolaBayCharterSchool it was 67 percent. In math, 53 percent of local 8th graders scored at grade level or above, statewide it was 67 percent. The ABC school once again came in above state averages at 72 percent. 8th graders were also tested in science this year – 28 percent of local 8th graders passed that section of the test, statewide 40 percent of 8th graders did – at the ABC school it was 44 percent.
