Franklin County hopes to work with Gadsden County on hurricane shelter

Franklin County commissioners say they would like to work with officials in Gadsden County on a hurricane shelter. There are no official hurricane shelters in Franklin County because we are one of the areas you have to evacuate from, not to and county commissioners want to make sure that when local residents have to evacuate they have someplace to go. There are designated evacuation shelters in Liberty and Leon counties – commissioners are concerned that those shelters could get very crowded very quickly, especially those in Tallahassee. On Tuesday the board agreed to contact officials in Gadsden County to talk about how the two counties can cooperate on providing shelter space there. Local county commissioners feel Gadsden county would be a good location to evacuate to because it would likely be less crowded than Leon County and because its easily reached on Highway 65 – one of the county’s main evacuation routes.
