Leon County issues mosquito advisory
A nearby county has issued a mosquito borne illness advisory, so people across the area may want to take greater precautions in avoiding mosquito bites. The advisory was issued in Leon County after two horses tested positive for the Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus within two weeks. Health officials say the risk of transmission to humans has been increased. To protect yourself from mosquitoes, you should avoid being outdoors at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are seeking blood. Wear clothing that covers most of your skin and use repellents containing up to 30% DEET. Possibly the most effective way to cut down on mosquito bites is to eliminate mosquito breeding sites by cleaning out eaves, troughs and gutters. Remove old tires or drill holes in those used in playgrounds to drain, and turn over or remove empty plastic pots. Check tarps on boats or other equipment that may collect water, and Pump out bilges on boats. Health officials are also looking for reports of dead birds, which could indicate West Nile ; Residents are encouraged to report dead birds via the web site myfwc.com/bird/.
