St. George Island fire department gets donation for emergency vehicle

The St. George Island fire department received a 5000 dollar check from the Prebble Rish engineering firm this week that will help emergency officials rescue people from the St. George Island fishing pier. The money will help pay for a special vehicle that can access the fishing pier by driving on the handicapped ramp. The fishing pier became inaccessible to emergency vehicles after the county built a boat ramp at the base of the pier. That made it difficult for emergency personnel to respond to any trouble on the pier, especially at the end of the pier which is a third of a mile long. The 5000 dollar donation will allow St. George Island fire department to purchase a smaller vehicle about the size of a golf cart which should be able to drive on the handicapped ramp to the pier while carrying a stretcher and other medical equipment.
