Black bears are in a feeding frenzy before winter

This is the time of year that black bears fatten up for winter and Franklin County is trying to protect its garbage cans from hungry bears. Bears tend to wander more during this time of year looking for food before they begin their winter hibernation. They will eat just about anything that comes to hand including pet food and garbage. There are more complaints from homeowners during this time of year about bears in their garbage cans and it turns out that county government is not immune to bear feedings either. County commissioners Tuesday discussed the fact that bears are getting into the trash cans at Carrabelle beach, leaving quite a mess for visitors to complain about. The board decided the easiest way to deal with the problem is to replace the existing cans with bear proof garbage containers. They expect to make the switch not only at Carrabelle beach but also in other areas around the county where bears tend to show up. Homeowners who would like to get bear proof trash cans for their homes should contact the Waste Pro garbage company which provides the containers to its customers for a small monthly fee. People who want to educate themselves on how to avoid bear problems can also download a pamphlet called “A Homeowner’s Guide – Living in Bear Country” which is available from myfwc.com
