County officials are looking at the possibility of expanding clam aquaculture in Franklin County. Currently clam farming is allowed in Alligator harbor near Alligator Point, but commissioners say the work is proving to be so successful that other people would like to become involved. The Division of Aquaculture said clam farming is now the largest marine aquaculture business in the state and Franklin County’s clam farmers play a significant role in that. There are currently 46 clam leases in Alligator Harbor; county commissioners would like to see more areas around Turkey Point opened up to clam farming. The problem with doing that is that those waters are not currently classified for shellfish harvesting. It would require the state reclassifying the waters for clam farming to be allowed. County staff is now working with the Division of Aquaculture to make that happen.
