Carrabelle gets grant to study expanding its water system

The city of Carrabelle is getting money to look at the feasibility of connecting its water system with Alligator Point. The Northwest Florida Water Management District has awarded a $100,000 grant to the City of Carrabelle to help the city develop a potable water system interconnection with the Alligator Point Water Resources District. The work will include evaluation of the current water systems, a hydraulic analysis for the proposed interconnection and an analysis of funding needs. The end product is expected to include identification of construction alternatives and funding requirements. Additionally, the project will include a water rate study that would focus on water conservation within the City of Carrabelle. Alligator Point faces seasonal water shortages – The Water Management District said the demands on the Alligator Point system have approached the capacity of the system during summer and holiday weekends. That is limiting additional development of water resources in the immediate area. The district said connecting Alligator Point’s system with Carrabelle’s could provide a solution with the dependability and reliability required to meet long-term water supply needs. The District’s Governing Board approved the grant award on Thursday, October 22.
