The Franklin County Commission and Weems memorial Hospital held a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday for a new urgent care clinic in Carrabelle. The clinic, which is expected to be complete next summer will expand medical services to the eastern end of Franklin County. The 5000 square foot building will cost an estimated million dollars to construct – that money has already been raised through a one cent sales tax approved by voters last year. According to Weems Hospital Administrator Chuck Colvert, the new clinic will provide work space for two doctors, a primary care doctor and a specialist. There will be 6 exam rooms, plus x-ray and lab services and the clinic will provide urgent care for emergency cases. The new clinic will also be able to share services with the Franklin County health department which has its offices directly next door. The engineering for the project was donated by Prebble Rish of Port St. Joe; the local hospital board is currently considering bids from 9 companies interested in serving as construction manager. County commission chairman Smokey Parrish who spoke at the groundbreaking called the clinic something that is truly needed on the eastern end of the county and has been for many years. He added that the people of Franklin County got the ball started on this project by approving the one cent sales tax for health care and now they are starting to see their hard earned tax dollars being put to work.
