The St. George Island lighthouse will soon have its own lighthouse keeper’s house. Work began this week on a recreation of the assistant lighthouse keeper’s house. The building is going up just west of the lighthouse – once it’s complete it will serve as a museum and offices for the lighthouse. The St. George Lighthouse Association says the 700 square foot building will be built in phases – this week the cement pilings were driven into the ground. The lighthouse Association is using local firms and volunteers to do the work. The group says it also has enough money on hand to put up the walls and roof and dry the building in but they are still about 50 thousand dollars short of being able to finish the interior of the building. They hope to raise the money and have building complete by next summer. Anyone who would like to make a donation to the cause should stop by the tourist center on St. George Island or go on-line to the lighthouse webpage at stgeorgelight.org.
