Program helps state prisoners get GEDs and plumbing certificates

The state prison in Carrabelle called the Franklin Correctional Institution recently held graduation ceremonies for twenty inmates who successfully completed the GED program and received their high school diplomas. The program is overseen by the prison’s education department and teacher Melonie Inzetta and teacher’s aide Joyce Isetts. During the last two years, 112 inmates have received their high school diplomas and 70 inmates have completed the Vocational Plumbing Program at Franklin Correctional and have received their plumbing certificates. The plumbing program is supervised by Dewey Smith. These programs are part of the Florida Department of Corrections on going re-entry initiative to reduce inmate recidivism rates. Statistics have shown that inmates who receive their GED while in prison are nearly 8 percent less likely to return to prison and inmates who receive a vocational certificate, like the plumbing certificate offered at Franklin CI, are 14% less likely return to prison.
