Local attorney named to hospital advisory board

County commissioners named local attorney Nick Yonclas to the county’s hospital advisory board this week but that nomination did lead some testy conversation at the county commission meeting. The county commission did not have a problem with placing Mister Yonclas on the board; they all agreed he would be a good addition to the committee. The controversy came when the commissioners tried to add two more members to the advisory board – they wanted to add local Physician’s Assistant Larry Applebee and retired resident Lynn Griner. County commissioners said they felt that if people want to donate their time to help with county issues they should be allowed to. Hospital Advisory board chairperson Gail Dodds however saw things a little differently. Miss Dodds pointed out that the hospital advisory board is extremely busy with local health care issues ranging from the construction of a new urgent care clinic in Carrabelle to operations at Weems Memorial Hospital. She said that adding more members to the 7 member board at this time would take the board’s focus away from its work to bring the new members up to speed. She asked that the commission hold off on the new members to give the hospital board time to discuss how the new members would be assimilated. When the county commission pushed the issue Miss Dodds asked whether the county wants to go back to running the hospital itself or would they like the advisory committee to keep doing its job. The county commission decided it would like the committee to keep doing its job, but they did ask their attorney to look at the advisory board’s by-laws to see what needs to be done to expand the membership to 9 members.
