All of the winter oyster bars are currently closed to oyster harvesting. The Department of Agriculture closed the approved winter east area 1611 of the bay at sunset on Tuesday. The approved west area was closed on Monday and the conditionally approved areas were closed over the weekend. The closures are due to high water levels in the Apalachicola River caused by heavy rains brought on by the remnants of Tropical Storm Ida. Department of Agriculture workers continue to take water samples from the oyster harvesting areas and will begin reopening portions of the bay when the water samples meet the requirements set up in the Apalachicola Bay management plan.
