County asks St. George Island water compnay to end plans for central sewer

Franklin County commissioners have agreed to officially ask Water Management Services of St. George Island to give up its plans of building a central sewer system in the business district of St. George Island. The central sewer project was proposed to help Island restaurants many of which were using undersized or non-functioning septic systems. Central sewer proponents also feel central sewer may help stop many of the swimming advisories that have plagued the island in recent years. At the time Water Management Services proposed the sewer system, water company owner Gene Brown said he would stop his plans if the county asked him to. Commissioners now plan to hold him to that. Last week commissioners voted unanimously to ask that the project be scrapped. The board said they don’t feel a central sewer is needed right now because St. George Island has gone through much of this summer with no swimming advisories. Commissioners added that they need to focus their attention at this time on the FDA attack on raw oysters and they don’t have the resources to split between fighting the FDA and Water Management Services. Earlier this year the county had also begun planning for a major study on the island to find the causes of swimming advisories. They felt the study would have helped decide whether a central sewer system was needed on the island. Last week the board announced that the funding for that study has fallen through. The county cannot afford to pay for a large study itself and said it will now look for other funding sources.
