Controlling fire ants on local sports fields is quite an expensive endeavor. The local parks and recreation department recently ran a fire ant eradication program at a number of local fields because the ants were so bad they were interfering with youth football and soccer practice. The department ran the program at the DW Wilson fields and the Seafood Landing Park in Apalachicola, at the Kendrick Sports Complex in Carrabelle and the Walking area in Lanark Village. They also got Vrooman Park in Eastpoint which parks and recreation director Van Johnson said was the most affected by fire ants. The eradication program was 95 percent successful, but very costly. The Parks and Recreation department spent nearly 10 thousand dollars to complete the project. In order to keep the parks fire ant free they will have to be treated at least once a year – so parks and recreation said it is something that will have to be added to the county budget in the future.
