Franklin County Commission meets on Tuesday

The Franklin County Commission tomorrow will elect its chairperson and vice-chairperson for the coming year. The current commission chairman is Smokey Parrish, the vice chair is Bevin Putnal. The board does not have a set policy on commission elections though for the past several years commissioners have agreed that the chairmanship would rotate, so that all commissioners would have the opportunity to serve as chairperson. Other items on Tuesday’s agenda include the presentation of oyster petitions. Those petitions were created to show opposition to the FDA plan to ban the sale of raw Gulf Coast oysters for much of the year beginning in 2011. The FDA, however, backed away from that proposal last week and has agreed to continue working with the industry on other ways of making raw oysters safer for consumers. Local firefighters will also attend Tuesday’s meeting to discuss MSBU allocations representatives of Big Bend Hospice will also be on hand asking that the county recognize November as National Hospice Month. The county commission will meet tomorrow morning at 9 at the Franklin County Courthouse Annex in Apalachicola. The meetings are open to the public.
