On-line opposition to FDA oyster ban growing quickly

There has been a lot of on-line support so far in opposition to FDA’s proposal to ban raw Gulf Coast oysters for 5 to 7 months out of the year. As of last Friday nearly 1700 people had signed the on-line petition to stop the ban. Nearly 700 people had joined the “Save our Oysters” facebook page. Both of the sites were created to draw attention to the FDA plan which was created with no pubic input. The FDA wants to ban raw Gulf Coast oysters to help curb deaths from Vibrio vulnificus, a naturally occurring bacterium that affects people with weakened immune systems. About 15 people die from the bacteria each year. The ban would likely kill the Gulf Coast oyster industry as we know it and affect coastal communities from Florida to Texas. If you would like to sign the on-line petition or would like to join the “Save our Oyster” facebook page – you can find the links to both sites on the news page at oysterradio.com.
