Gulf Coast seafood interests continue to bring opposition to an FDA proposal to ban raw Gulf Coast oysters for much of the year. Over the Seafood Festival weekend the Franklin County Seafood Workers Association collected over 4,000 petition signatures from people who oppose the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ban. On Facebook the Save the Gulf Coast Oyster Industry group has nearly 6,000 members in just one week, while an online petition at the new information site SaveOurShellfish.org has 3500 signatures in just four days. The petition signatures are just part of a growing outcry from tens of thousands of people who disagree with the FDA attempt to ban raw oysters. In New Orleans, the city council recently passed a resolution opposing the proposed FDA ban, joining a growing list of local governments and business groups who say a ban would eliminate thousands of jobs. You can get a lot more information about the proposed FDA ban and some of the actions being taken to fight it by going on-line to saveourshellfish.org.
