The Florida Public Service Commission has agreed to lower the fuel charges for Progress Energy Florida customers by nearly 10 dollars a month, but with proposed increases in other sections of the bill, customers will likely only save a nickel a month. The Public Service Commission held hearings last week to decide how much Progress Energy Florida can charge customers for the fuel needed to generate electricity. The commission agreed to cut the fuel portion of the bill by 9.89 cents a month for 1000 kilowatt hours of electricity. At the same time they approved increases of $2.25 a month for Environmental cost recovery; $6.55 in Capacity; and $0.47 in Energy Conservation. That means a Progress Energy customer using 1000 kilowatts hours of electricity in a month will see their power bill drop from 127.31 to 127.26 beginning in January. And we may not even see that because Progress Energy is still seeking an increase in its base rates, but the Public Service Commission won’t rule on that request until January the 28th.
