Portions of the Apalachicola Bay will close to oyster harvesting at sunset on Saturday. The Department of Agriculture will close the conditionally approved winter west 2 area 1622 and the conditionally approved winter east area 1642 of the Apalachicola bay at sunset tomorrow. The closure is due to rising water levels in the Apalachicola River. The river is expected to be near 19 feet through the weekend which is 4 feet above flood stage. Under the current Apalachicola Bay management plan, Areas nearest the mouth of the river are closed when the river rises above 11.2 feet. Once the river falls below 11.2 feet again the state will test water quality and fecal coliform levels before reopening the areas to commercial oyster harvesters.
