Public hearing on snapper, grouper and tilefish IFQ program tonight in Apalachicola

Commercial snapper, grouper and tilefish fisherman are being asked to attend a public hearing today at the Franklin County courthouse to find out more about the Individual Fishing Quota Program for grouper and tilefish and changes to the program for red snapper. Federal Fisheries regulators will hold a public hearing today from 6 till 9 at the Courthouse to meet with fishermen that will be affected by the changes. The proposed changes are designed to bring the existing red snapper program into line with a new grouper and tilefish Individual Fishing Quota program that will take effect in January. Some of the changes that will take effect beginning January 1st include a requirement for pre-approved landing locations for both the red snapper and grouper/tilefish IFQ programs. There will also be a requirement for an IFQ vessel account for any person aboard a commercial vessel to land red snapper, groupers, or tilefishes and there will be changes in the share transfer rules that will require share transfers to be handled on-line on no longer by paper transaction. There are a few other changes also coming next year so commercial red snapper, grouper and tilefish fishermen should attend today’s workshop. Again, it will be held from 6 till 9 PM at the Franklin County Courthouse in Apalachicola.
