St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge could expand in to Franklin County

The St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge is looking at expanding another 35 thousand acres which could bring it in to Franklin County. The acreage would include upland pine forests, wetlands and coastal habitats in Wakulla, Jefferson, Franklin, and Taylor counties. The expansion into Franklin County would include 2,228 acres along the mouth of the Ochlocknee River. The refuge said the additional property would provide additional habitat for wildlife including the Florida black bear. It would also protect habitat for several threatened and endangered species including the frosted flatwoods salamander, the red-cockaded woodpecker, and the whooping crane, The refuge said the expansion will also allow it to continue its efforts to protect the clean water, and restore the historic hydrology of the area. You can see a the full proposal on-line at the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge website. A number of public hearings will also be held on the proposed expansion on Tuesday, November the 17th at the Wakulla County Public Library and Thursday, November the 19th at the Leroy Collins Leon County Public Library on Park Avenue in Tallahassee.
