County commissioners last week agreed to continue its 15 year agreement with the Apalachee Regional Planning Council to provide a small quantity hazardous waste assessment.
The assessment is done every two years to see how much hazardous waste is generated by small counties like Franklin County. Hazardous waste includes gasoline, paint, pesticides, florescent light bulbs and old televisions which can’t be disposed of in regular landfills. The assessment costs the county 3500 dollars.
Franklin County has a separate agreement with Okaloosa County to actually dispose of its hazardous waste. Under that agreement Franklin County’s hazardous waste is collected once a year and mixed with the waste generated in Okaloosa County before it is shipped off to an appropriate disposal site.
