Work begins next year to fix mold problems at Apalachicola Health Department

Work will begin early next year to fix humidity issues in the Health department building in Apalachicola.

Health department workers had to move out of the 10 year old building earlier this year after it was discovered that high humidity in the building was causing mold to form. The mold did pose a health hazard and some workers in the office did file workman’s comp claims.

Currently health department services are being offered from the old school board building in Apalachicola.

On December the 15th, health department workers said the problem has now been isolated and should cost about 160 thousand dollars to fix. The problem was that too much outside air was being allowed in through the air conditioning system, the fix will require the installation of a de-humidifier to the existing duct work. The building will also have to be cleaned of any mold.

The design phase of the project should begin in January and the project should take 4 to 5 months to complete. The cost for the work will be shared equally between the county and the health department. The county commission says it already has 80 thousand dollars budgeted for the work.
