County commissioners say they are going to find out why Black bear crossing signs they asked to be placed at the foot of The St. George Island Bridge in August are still not up yet. The board made the request in an effort to protect the bears that sometimes bolt across Island Drive near the bridge.
So far there has been one black bear killed in that area when it had to be euthanized after it was hit by a car in early 2008. Commissioners say they will contact VMS, the company which manages to state roads in Franklin County, to see why the signs are not yet in place and to ask that the signs be placed as soon as possible.
In other black bear news the county was thanked for placing black bear resistant trash containers at Carrabelle Beach. The county commission agreed to place the containers at the beach in late October after hearing complaints that black bears were getting in to the trash there and spreading it across the parking area. On December 15th Carrabelle resident Leslie Cox thanked the county for replacing the containers and said they are working. Commissioner Pinki Jackel said this might be a bear success story.
