County officials say the state Department of Transportation does plan to remove the pilings left after the destruction of the St. George Island Bridge but it will likely be next summer before the work begins.
For months county commissioners have been trying to get the state to remove a number of pilings from the old St. George Island Bridge which are now posing a hazard to boaters. The pilings were supposed to have been removed when the bridge was demolished in 2005; instead they were broken off just below the waterline.
The danger area from the foot of the St. George Island fishing pier to the old causeway has been marked so that boaters steer clear, but the county says it wants the pilings pulled out. The Department of Transportation has done a scan of the bay bottom to determine the location of the pilings and says it should have a plan for removal soon.
They won’t be able to advertise for a removal contract, however, until the beginning of the next fiscal year which begins in June.
