Franklin County calls for voluntary evacuation because of flood threat

Franklin County has called for a voluntary evacuation of areas along Highway 65 along the Apalachicola River because of the threat of moderate flooding. The voluntary evacuation is for the area starting at Brickyard Road and continuing south along Highway 65.

The emergency management office said the evacuation notice is precautionary only – it is not mandatory, though it is strongly advised. River levels at Blountstown are expected to hit nearly 24 feet later today – that’s nearly 9 feet above flood stage. It will take a few days for that water to move into Franklin County and the Apalachicola Bay.

Gulf County has also declared a state of emergency due to river flood conditions.

All people with interests along the Apalachicola River are urged to monitor river levels and be prepared to take whatever actions are needed to protect life and property. The Department of Agriculture has also closed a portion of the Apalachicola Bay to oyster harvesting as of sunset Thursday. The Department closed the approved winter west area 1611 of the bay because of high waters flowing from the Apalachicola River.
