Two black bears were hit by cars just west of Lanark Village Thursday night. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said one of the bears was killed the other was hurt but not severely.
Officials were alerted to the incident just after 7 PM Thursday night when someone reported a dead bear on the highway at the intersection of Highway 98 and Highway 319. Officers found a dead bear cub on the road, it weighed about 50 pounds. They believe it was less than a year old, likely born last January or February.
While officers were removing the carcass, they discovered a second bear in the woods just a few hundred yards further east of the cub. They believe the second bear was the cub’s mother. It was also injured but not severely; officers said the bear suffered a broken nose. The bear was tranquilized and relocated Thursday night.
