Franklin County commissioners will hold a meeting with state aquaculture officials later this month to look at the possibility of expanding clam aquaculture in Franklin County.
Clam farming began in Franklin County with the approval of 46 clam aquaculture leases in Alligator Harbor in January 2002.
The board will meet on December the 17th with state aquaculture officials to review the current state of the clam farming industry in Franklin County, and to discuss what the current and future opportunities for the industry are. The groups will also decide if there is a need to conduct a state submerged lands bottom survey to identify potential new clam aquaculture areas in Franklin County.
The county commission says is interested in expanding clam aquaculture in Franklin County to allow more people to take part in what has proved to be relatively lucrative business. The commission says it has a few areas in mind that might make good locations for clam farming and they would like the state to begin monitoring the waters to see if they meet the criteria for clam farms.
The Clam Farming Feasibility Workshop will be held next Thursday, December the 17th at 6:00 pm at the Carrabelle City Complex. For additional information about the workshop, please contact Franklin County extension Agent Bill Mahan at 653-9337.
