Franklin County gets money for Reverse-911 service

Local emergency officials will soon have the capability of calling every home in the county to announce evacuations or emergencies.

The Franklin County sheriff’s office was recently awarded grant money to purchase and operate a reverse 911 system also known as Wireless Emergency Notification. The money was part of a 435 thousand dollar grant to expand communications in Franklin County.

The system, which should be operational in March or April, will allow emergency officials to call every home in the county or just call certain sections of the county depending on the type and location of the emergency. All land line phones will automatically be connected to the system; people with cell phones will have to request to be added.

County commissioners said the new system should be a huge help especially during hurricanes when evacuations are called. Being able to contact homes in the affected areas will help free up firemen and deputies who otherwise would have to go door to door alerting people of the evacuation.
