Franklin County's best spellers compete for chance to go to regional spelling bee

20 of Franklin County’s top spellers met Tuesday to compete for the chance to go to the regional spelling bee in Tallahassee and they had to spell their way through some doozies like “ineffable”, “photosynthesis”, “subterranean” and “rutabaga”.

The students ranged from 4th through 8th grades and represented both the Franklin County School and the Apalachicola Bay Charter School.

This year’s top speller is a 7th grader from the ABC school named Malachi Parker, he won by correctly spelling the words “labyrinth” and “cajolery”. 2nd place went to an ABC school 4th grader named Conner Rash – he was knocked out by the word “aggrandizement”. Third place went to a 5th grader from the Franklin County School named Matthew Drennen who misspelled the word “fallacy”.

All twenty of the contestants received a certificate for competing in the county-wide spelling bee.

Malachi Parker will compete in the Tallahassee Democrat Big Bend Regional Spelling Bee which is generally held in February for a chance to go to the national spelling bee in Washington DC.
