Saltwater angler registry takes effect on January 1st

Recreational Saltwater fishermen will have to register with the federal government beginning with the New Year. A new national saltwater angler registry takes effect on January the 1st for all marine recreational fishermen to help better protect shared marine resources.

It’s expected that more than 15 million saltwater anglers will have to register – though most fishermen in Florida will not need to do anything. People already holding a Florida fishing license will automatically be added to the registry. Also, fishermen under 16, people on charter boats, and commercial fishermen will not need to register.

Federal researchers say the information will help demonstrate the economic value of saltwater recreational fishing, and will provide a more complete picture of how recreational fishing is affecting fish stocks. Registration will be free in 2010. An estimated fee of $15 to $25 per angler will be charged starting in 2011.
