St. George Island Fire Department holds annual hat drive

The St. George Island Volunteer Fire Department is holding its Annual Hat Drive.

For the past 27 years this popular fundraiser has accounted for a generous portion of the Fire Department's budget. Basically it raises money by giving a collectible St. George Island Volunteer Fire Department hat to anyone who makes a donation of 100 dollars or more.

The money helps keep the fire department well equipped and trained. And the money is put to good use. During the first ten months of 2009, the SGI First Responder unit responded to 120 medical calls; Fire Fighters responded to 43 fire calls; and the Water Rescue unit has responded to 26 calls.

Approximately 40 percent of the annual operating budget is funded through a Municipal Service Benefit Unit of $50 per house; the balance is generated through fundraisers such as the St. George Island Charity Chili Cook-off every March, the Hat Drive every December, and the generosity of businesses, property owners, and residents.

If you would like to make a donation to the cause, Send donations, payable to St. George Island Volunteer Fire Department, to Post Office Box 682, Eastpoint, Florida, 32328.
