State scanner survey finds few errors

When you do your last minute Christmas shopping this week you can have faith that the stores are charging you the right price for your gifts.

According to a statewide scanner survey conducted by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services which involved 54 stores in 27 cities, 99 percent of the 2,975 items tested scanned accurately. And better yet, among the 32 pricing errors, more were in the customers' favor than in the stores'.

Only 2 of the 54 stores visited failed their inspection, but those were due to excessive undercharges – which means those stores will get a follow up inspection to make sure they have fixed the problem.

While the survey found that scanning errors are relatively uncommon, mistakes do occur. So when you’re buying your Christmas gifts this week stay aware of the price that should be charged and keep your eye on the scanner. People who believe that they have been overcharged, or who detect problems with a store’s scales, should call 1 800 HELP FLA.
