Franklin County commissioners have agreed to withhold county funding for programs for senior citizens while they investigate claims that the programs are not being well run.
Eastpoint resident Joyce Timmons addressed the board about the issue this week. Miss Timmons serves on the Franklin County senior Citizens Council.
She expressed concerns about a number of local programs ranging from meals on wheels to programs that provide senior citizens with housekeeping services, caretaking, Alzheimer’s programs and Medicaid waivers. She said most of the programs are not being provided fully and even those that are, are not as accessible as they should be.
Besides a need for better oversight for the programs for local seniors Miss Timmons said the county is also in desperate need of a communal meal site where local seniors can get together to eat. That;, she said, would be invaluable to keep seniors from becoming homebound.
County commissioners said they plan to find out what’s gong on as soon as possible. The board agreed to hold county funding for the programs immediately and to request that a representative from the Area Agency of Aging attend the next county commission meeting to explain why these issues exist.
