Officials agree to look at expanding clam farming in Franklin County

Florida’s bureau of aquaculture development has agreed to conduct bottom surveys in several areas of the Apalachicola Bay to see if they are suitable for clam farming.

State aquaculture officials held a workshop in Franklin County last month to discuss the feasibility of expanding clam aquaculture in the area. About 15 people attended the workshop to learn more about the ongoing clam aquaculture project at Alligator Harbor and to discuss the expanding the project to other areas. Several of the attendees were current oyster harvesters who are considering clam farming as a summertime employment option.

State officials have also agreed to work with individuals who want to gain some practical experience with clam farming before getting a lease. The Franklin county commission has asked that the state expand clam aquaculture in Franklin County to allow more people to take part in what has proved to be relatively lucrative business.

Clam farming began in Franklin County with the approval of 46 clam aquaculture leases in Alligator Harbor in January 2002. The Division of Aquaculture says clam farming is the largest marine aquaculture business in the state.
