The Southern Company and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation have awarded a number of grants to help conservation efforts throughout the Southeast. Since 2002, Southern Company and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation have contributed nearly $10 million through 88 grants which have helped restore more than 177,000 acres of longleaf pine and other critical habitat on public and private lands to benefit bird populations across the Southeast.
This year grant money went to the Florida Park Service provide long-term protection of shorebirds, seabirds and their habitat. The St. Catherines Island Foundation received money to determine if artificial incubation of American Oystercatcher eggs is a practical and effective management tool.
The Milliken Forestry Company was awarded a grant to increase the number of red cockaded woodpeckers in the Apalachicola National forest and Project Orianne was awarded a grant to restore or improve 10,000 acres of longleaf pine habitat within the Apalachicola and Conecuh national forests to provide habitat for declining bird populations, such as red-cockaded woodpeckers and Bachmann's sparrow.
