It’s not often that the power company asks people to use less electricity, but that’s exactly what Progress Energy Florida is doing. Because of the recent cold temperatures system demand is approaching the maximum capabilities of Progress Energy’s system.
The power company wants to make sure there is plenty of juice for the heaters so they are asking customers to save energy in other ways by turning off unnecessary lights, not using dishwashers, washing machines and dryers and postponing chores that require electrical equipment. If you can cook with your energy-efficient microwave instead of your stove that would also save substantial electricity.
Progress Energy said by reducing our use of electricity, we can help ensure an uninterrupted flow of electricity to all customers. Once this extreme cold passes, we can resume normal power use.
Electricity use across the state has reached record levels. Last week, Progress Energy Florida customers set an hourly peak-demand record, using 10,299 megawatt-hours (MWh) as temperatures dipped into the 20s throughout much of the state.
