St. George Island murder update #1 with arrest report

A 71-year-old grandmother vacationing on St. George Island was arrested and charged Tuesday with first-degree murder in the apparent drowning death of her 5-year-old grandson.

The Franklin County sheriff’s office said that they believe Marrianne Bordt drowned her grandson in the bathtub while her husband, Heinz Bordt, was shopping Monday afternoon.

According to arrest records, Mr. Bordt had gone to Apalachicola at around 2 o’clock Monday afternoon to do some shopping. He returned to their rental home at 641 East Gorrie Drive at about 4:30 and noticed that the front door was open and he saw his wife returning from the beach. She was wet from the neck down.

She told her husband that she had tried to kill herself in the ocean. When Mister Bordt asked where his grandson was she said she had killed him so he wouldn’t have to grow up in a divorced home. Mister Bordt found his grandson’s body partially submerged in a bathtub. He drove to the fire station to get help – Emergency crews found the boy already dead.

Marianne Bordt was booked into the Franklin County jail at 1 a.m. Tuesday. Both Mrs. Bordt and her husband are German nationals; their most recent address in listed as Rowell, Georgia. Because they are German nationals the German consulate in Washington, D.C., was notified after the arrest.

Mrs. Bordt has been placed on suicide watch at the county jail. Mrs. Bordt had first appearance before Franklin County judge Van Russell this afternoon at the Franklin County Courthouse. Judge Russell ordered that Mrs. Bordt be held without bond.
