Census forms arrive in US homes this week

Census forms began arriving in mailboxes across the country this week. The 2010 census was sent to 120 million households.

The forms ask 10 questions and should take about 10 minutes to complete.

Filling out the census is important – the results decide how congress is apportioned and also how more than $400 billion in federal funds are distributed to tribal, state and local governments every year — including funding for schools, roads, health care and other critical programs.

Filling out the form will also keep census takers from knocking on your door.
It also saves tax money.

It costs the government just 42 cents for a postage paid envelope when a household mails back the form; it costs $57 to send a census taker door-to-door to follow up with each household that fails to respond.
