FWC plans to end fox and coyote enclosures in Florida

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are moving forward with a draft rule prohibiting the operation of fox and coyote enclosures around the state.
The enclosures allow hunters to let their dogs chase foxes and coyotes within a closed area.
The enclosures are supposed to provide places for the foxes and coyotes to hide from the dogs, but that has not always proved to be the case.
The move to end fox and coyote enclosures is supported by many people who call the practice cruel but is also opposed by people who fell the practice is a "valued family tradition".
Last September, FWC Commissioners began a review of the permitting process for the enclosures in the state and also ceased issuing new fox and coyote enclosure permits.
In February, Commissioners approved the temporary prohibition of chasing foxes and coyotes in enclosures.
After that meeting Franklin County commissioners issued a resolution supporting the practice.
The FWC will likely approve the rule banning fox and coyote enclosures in September and then establish a timeline for relinquishing foxes and coyotes currently in possession.
FWC staff also agreed to explore further options for dog-hunting of foxes and coyotes on open public lands around the state.
