Black bears are on the move

Don’t be surprised if you see more black bears than usual over the next few months.

Bears tend to wander more during this time of year looking for food before they begin their winter hibernation.

Bear sightings are especially prevalent in Franklin County because the Apalachicola National Forest is one of the 6 Florida areas with a large bear population.

From now until sometime in December, most of Florida's bears will be out foraging for whatever they can find including berries, bugs, acorns and garbage straight out of the can, if it's available.

They'll also eat cat food and dog food if it's left out in the open.

State officials say that if you know you live in bear habitat the best way to keep bears out of your yard is to avoid leaving pet food out where bears can get to it.

After your animal eats put the leftover food and container away.

The state also recommends you keep your garbage in a garage or building until it’s time for pick up service.

Or better yet, get a bear resistant garbage container from your trash company.

If you should come across a black bear over the next few months, remember it is illegal to capture, kill or even attempt to kill it because it is a protected species.
