Camp Gordon Johnston History and Museum Featured as The Cover Story In the October, 2010, Issue of Military Officer Magazine

With a worldwide circulation of approximately 350,000, the current October issue has
featured Camp Gordon Johnston in a three-page article about the camp and the historical
preservation efforts of the Camp Gordon Johnston Association.

The article was authored by Ms Marilyn Pribus who accompanied the recent Geiger
group of writers visiting Franklin County as part of the TDC’s efforts at promoting
tourism in our area.

Kevin Patton, Manager of Bald Point State Park, and Ms Linda Minichiello, Curator
of the CGJ WWII Museum described the extent and size of Camp Gordon Johnston
while surviving CGJ veterans, from all over the U.S., told of their training experiences
while stationed at the camp. The article points out the importance the military placed on
anticipated amphibious operations and how the scope of the training here played such an
important part of that mission.

Even though the magazine specifically requested that Ms. Pribus concentrate on the
military training aspect of the camp in Franklin County during WWII, she was able
to promote other areas to visit such as the restored lighthouse at St. George Island,
the Wildlife Sanctuaries, Kayaking, Camping, Fishing and, of course, the shops and
restaurants of our area.

Interested persons can view the article on line at: http://moaa.org/pubs/default.htm and go
to the current issue. The article is on pages 68-70 and there is even a short video taken by
the U.S. Army Signal Corps showing actual training at the Camp.
