It's Fall! October is Florida's Greenways and Trails Month and also the official state camping month. What a perfect time to explore Franklin's County's vast expanse of hiking and paddling trails and camping sites. Hiking. The Apalachicola National Forest offers more than 564,000 acres of hiking, camping, picnicking, boating, hunting and fishing opportunities. The Tate's Hell State Forest features the unique High Bluff Coastal Hiking Trail which winds six miles through the forest, often paralleling St. George Sound.

Fishing. During the cooler fall months, fishing is at its peak in Franklin County. According to local fishing guides, fall typically brings the fall migration of white shrimp followed by all the different species of fish that eat them followed by all the fishermen! You can visit floridastateparks.org for a comprehensive list of State Parks and amenities. The Tate's Hell State Forest also features camping as does the Apalachicola National Forest. This fall you can take your ATV with you camping when you visit the Tate's Hell State Forest. The State Division of Forestry recently launched a pilot project which will allow visitors to bring their ATVs with them when they visit the forest. Lantern Festival. On Oct. 30 Carrabelle Beach will be the site of the Crooked River Lighthouse Lantern Festival from 2-10 p.m. The event, sponsored by the Carrabelle Lighthouse Association, in honor of the lighthouse's 115th birthday, will feature 115 flickering lanterns - 1 for each year! Ghostwalk. Historic hauntings continue in Apalachicola on October 30 at the Chestnut Street Cemetery in Apalachicola. From 7-9 p.m. local history enthusiasts from the Apalachicola Area Historical Society will don the garb and take on the personna of several of the cemetery's more notable inhabitants to tell their tale of life in Apalachicola more than 100 years ago. Blues, Jazz and Boo's Two days of Fall fun beginning with a jazz concert on Friday, Oct. 29. Oyster Roast Nov. 5 Dine under the stars in the heart of historic Apalachicola at the 6th annual Apalachicola Oyster Roast on November 5th 6-9 pm. Historic Apalachicola Christmas Celebration Be in Apalachicola the day after Thanksgiving to enjoy the town's annual Christmas Celebration. Merchants will be open late and the sounds of carolers will echo through the streets filling the evening with the Christmas spirit. Santa will arrive on a shrimp boat at 4:00 p.m. at the City Dock on Water Street. Santa will hear children’s Christmas wishes and carolers will sing.
