Tropics Update - Monday morning notes on Matthew, Lisa and 96L

  • Matthew weakened into a remnant area of low pressure on Sunday over Mexico and the National Hurricane Center discontinued advisories on the storm. Matthew is expected to dissipate over land through the next few days.
  • Lisa has also weakened to a remnant low and the National Hurricane Center has discontinued advisories on this storm.
  • A new tropical wave has developed in the northwestern Caribbean Sea. Though showers and storms are disorganized, there is a 30% chance that this wave could become the next tropical depression or tropical storm. Hurricane Hunter aircraft is scheduled to investigate the system this afternoon. The next name on the list is Nicole.
  • The full suite of computer models on this system will be released later this morning, but global models suggest a somewhat rapid northward track, possibly towards Cuba and Florida, through the next 2-4 days.
  • However, models differ greatly on the strength of the system. The fast movement of the system and shear created by a cold front currently moving through North Florida may help keep the system weak.
  • The end result is a LOW CONFIDENCE forecast with timing and nature of impacts too uncertain to predict with any accuracy. Heavy rain may likely be the consistent factor even if nothing major forms.
